DUOTTS Chain Noise & Gear Shifting Fix – 15-Minute DIY Guide
A squeaky chain. Gears that skip when you pedal. A derailleur that refuses to shift smoothly.
These are the most common frustrations on any e-bike – including DUOTTS. The good news? Most drivetrain problems are easy to fix yourself in about 15 minutes.
Here’s a complete guide to cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting your DUOTTS chain and gears.

What’s Causing the Noise?
Chain noise usually comes from one of these:
Dry chain – The original lubricant has worn off. Metal rubbing on metal.
Dirty chain – Grit and dirt build up, causing friction and noise.
Misaligned derailleur – The chain isn’t running straight through the gears.
Worn components – Chain, cassette, or chainring may be past their best.
Start with cleaning and lubricating – this solves 80% of chain noise problems.
Step 1 – Clean the Chain (5 Minutes)
What You’ll Need
- A clean cloth
- Chain cleaner tool or old toothbrush
- Degreaser (bike-specific, not household cleaner)
How to Do It
- Pedal backwards slowly while holding the cloth against the chain to wipe off loose dirt.
- Apply degreaser to the chain while pedalling backwards.
- Use a brush to scrub the chain, cassette (rear gears), and chainring (front gear).
- Wipe the chain clean with a dry cloth. Repeat until the cloth comes away clean.
Pro tip: If you have a quick-link on your chain, you can remove it and soak it in degreaser for a deeper clean. But this isn't necessary for routine maintenance.
Step 2 – Lubricate the Chain (2 Minutes)
After cleaning, lubrication is essential. A dry chain is a noisy chain.
- Apply a drop of chain lubricant (wet lube for wet conditions, dry lube for dry) to each link.
- Pedal backwards for 10-15 rotations to work the lube into the links.
- Wipe off excess lubricant with a clean cloth. Too much lube attracts dirt.
What NOT to use: WD-40, cooking oil, or motor oil – these are not chain lubricants. They will damage your drivetrain over time.
Step 3 – Adjust the Gears (5 Minutes)
If your gears are still skipping or slow to shift after cleaning and lubricating, the derailleur needs adjusting.
Diagnose the Problem
- Chain struggles to shift up to bigger gears (harder to pedal) – cable tension may be too loose
- Chain struggles to shift down to smaller gears (easier to pedal) – cable tension may be too tight
- Chain skips or jumps under load – check for a bent derailleur hanger or worn chain
Quick Adjustment
- Find the barrel adjuster (threaded knob) where the gear cable meets the derailleur.
- To shift to larger gears more easily: turn the barrel adjuster counter-clockwise (increases tension).
- To shift to smaller gears more easily: turn the barrel adjuster clockwise (decreases tension).
- Turn in quarter increments. Test shift after each adjustment.
Important: A full derailleur adjustment (limit screws, indexing) is more complex. If the barrel adjuster doesn't fix the problem, take your DUOTTS to a local bike shop.
When to Seek Professional Help
Some drivetrain issues are best left to professionals:
- Worn cassette or chain – a bike shop has tools to measure wear and replace components
- Bent derailleur hanger – requires a special tool to straighten
-
Grinding noise that won’t go away – may indicate worn bearings or motor coupling

How Often Should You Clean and Lube Your Chain?
| Frequency | Action |
|---|---|
| Every 200-300 km | Quick wipe and lube |
| Every 500 km | Deep clean (Step 1 + Step 2) |
| After every wet or muddy ride | Wipe and lube – water washes away lubricant |
FAQ – DUOTTS Chain & Gear Questions
Q1: My chain is making noise even after I cleaned and lubricated it – what next?
Check if the chain is worn (stretched). A bike shop can measure it. If it's stretched, it needs replacing. Also check if the derailleur is bent – even a slight bend can cause noise and poor shifting.
Q2: How often should I replace my DUOTTS chain?
Every 2000-3000 km depending on riding conditions. Muddy or sandy conditions wear chains faster. If you ride through winter with road salt, it also shortens chain life. Replace it earlier if you notice skipping.
Q3: Can I use degreaser on the motor or electrical parts?
Never. Keep degreaser away from the motor, controller, battery, and display. If degreaser gets on electrical components, wipe it off immediately with a clean cloth and do not let it dry on the surface. When cleaning the drivetrain, remove the battery if possible and avoid spraying anything near the motor.
Bottom Line
A noisy chain and sluggish gears are annoying – but they’re easy to fix.
Clean it. Lube it. Adjust the barrel. Done.
